Interface between the Seen and the Unseen

In this discourse, given at the Academy of Self Knowledge's annual conference in March of 2015 at the Rasooli Centre in Pretoria, South Africa, Dr. Ali Allawi shares his life long quest to try to find the interface (the connecting thread) between the seen and the unseen, i.e., between physics and metaphysics.

He argues that it is this play between the 'absolute' annd 'relative', between the 'near' and the 'far', between 'singularity' and 'multiplicity' that is the pivot on all existence -- all entities, events and phenomena that come to being. (46 min: 29 sec)

Crisis of Islamic Civilization

Dr. Ali Allawi shares his latest thinking on his book, The Crisis of Islamic Civilization. This talk was given in 2007. (58 min: 46 sec)

Occupation of Iraq

In this talk, given in February of 2007, Dr. Ali Allawi discusses the essential issues that are facing Iraq after the invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq broke a long-standing power structure not only in Iraq but also in the Middle East. The nation-state system that was broken with the invasion of Iraq was really created as a conseqence of World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and and the division of the Middle East into territorial nation states, countries that had had no experience in the past with the form of politics that are implicit in the construct of a nation-state. The Middle East was either part of larger empires or the centre of a world empire. (57 min: 11 sec)

The Making of the Modern Middle East (An Interview Given to the BBC on March 24, 2014)

Anne McElvoy explores the roads not taken with the historian Richard Evans. Counterfactual history began as an Enlightenment parlour game and has become a serious academic pursuit, but Evans argues against endless speculation as to what might have been. The final meeting between Lawrence of Arabia and Faisal I of Iraq was an anti-climax which belied their history. The biographers of these two leaders, Scott Anderson and the former Iraqi politician Ali Allawi, place these men at the centre of the making of the modern Middle East. The writer Malu Halasa offers an alternative view of the violent events in Syria as she curates a book of political posters, comic strips, blogs and plays. (42 min: 00 sec)
